Are you visiting South Finistère and looking for a market to visit today? Between the Walled Town of Concarneau and the Bélon estuary, the markets of southern Finistère set the pace for the week, each with its own character: the grand market halls of Concarneau, the artists’ market in Pont-Aven, the summer evenings in Névez, or the oysters sold outside the market halls in Riec-sur-Bélon. Here is the full day-by-day calendar, with locations and opening times to help you plan your holiday mornings (and evenings).

Which market is on today? This week’s schedule

Monday: Concarneau, forecourt of Les Halles

The week gets off to a start in Concarneau with the Monday morning market, on the forecourt of Les Halles, Place Jean Jaurès. Fish fresh from the fish market, seasonal fruit and vegetables, crêpes and galettes: a lovely way to start the week, just a stone’s throw from the Ville Close.

Tuesday: Pont-Aven, the town of painters

On Tuesday morning, head to Pont-Aven. The market runs all year round: at Quai Botrel in the warmer months, and at Place Julia in winter. Stroll amongst the stalls along the banks of the Aven, then make your way up towards the art galleries and the Bois d’Amour: it doesn’t get much more Breton than this.

Also worth noting on Tuesdays: the organic market in Trégunc, on Place de l’Église, from 4 pm.

Wednesday: Riec-sur-Bélon, in oyster country

On Wednesday mornings, from 8 am, the Riec-sur-Bélon market takes place in the market halls on Place Yves Loudoux, right in the heart of the village. It is a small, intimate market where you can find, amongst other things, oysters and shellfish from producers along the ria. On the same day, Trégunc holds its Wednesday morning market on Place de l’Église.

Thursday: Névez, the evening market

From 1 May to 30 September, Névez comes alive with its late-afternoon market: every Thursday from 4.30 pm to 8 pm, at the Place de l’Église. Local producers, honey, organic vegetables, crêpes, cheeses, rotisserie: the perfect atmosphere for putting together a holiday dinner on your return from the beach. The market is held just a few minutes’ walk from the Ar Men Du hotel: have a stroll amongst the stalls, then head to Raguénez to round off the evening overlooking the sea.

Friday: Concarneau, the big event

On Friday morning, head back to Concarneau for the second market of the week on the forecourt of Les Halles. It’s the area’s biggest event: arrive early to make the most of the best stalls, then round off your visit with a stroll through the narrow streets of the Ville Close.

Saturday: Névez and Riec-sur-Bélon

Two options on Saturday mornings. In Névez, the weekly market brings the Place de l’Église to life all year round: the perfect stop-off before a day at the beaches of Raguénez or Tahiti. In Riec-sur-Bélon, the market halls on Place Yves Loudoux host the weekend market from 8am, with around ten stallholders selling shellfish, fruit and vegetables, ready meals and Breton crêpes.

Sunday: Pointe de Trévignon, right by the water’s edge

On Sunday mornings in July and August, the market is held at Pointe de Trévignon in Trégunc, overlooking the sea. And all year round, at Trévignon harbour, fishermen sell their catch fresh from the boat every day (opening hours displayed on site): the place to go for lovers of ultra-fresh fish.

Pont-Aven, The market, between stalls and galleries

It’s hard to imagine a prettier market setting than Pont-Aven. On Tuesday mornings, the market stalls stretch along the harbour, between the windmills and the granite façades that inspired Gauguin and the Pont-Aven School. Do some shopping, try a Pont-Aven galette, then let yourself be carried away: the art galleries, the Pont-Aven Museum and the Bois d’Amour promenade are just a short walk away. Ar Men Du, a quarter of an hour from the town of painters, is the ideal base from which to explore it and venture out to the local markets.

Riec-sur-Bélon : the market in the land of the flat oyster

Riec-sur-Bélon is a name that resonates with all food lovers: it is here, in the waters of the ria, that the Bélon flat oyster has built its reputation. The Wednesday and Saturday morning market, held under the covered market on Place Yves Loudoux, is a natural extension of this: here you’ll find oysters and shellfish from local producers, to enjoy on the spot or take away. To take things a step further, several oyster farmers along the ria offer direct sales and tastings right by the water’s edge: an experience not to be missed in the area. And it’s just a stone’s throw from the Bélon ria to the tables at Raguénez: the Ar Men Du restaurant showcases seafood, overlooking Raguénez Island.

Concarneau : the Market Halls and the market in the Ville Close

Concarneau boasts the most comprehensive range of produce in southern Finistère. In addition to the two weekly markets on Monday and Friday mornings, there is Les Halles, open seven days a week from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm on Place Jean Jaurès: freshly landed fish, langoustines, fruit and vegetables, crêpes and galettes all year round. And from May to August, on Wednesdays from 3.00 pm to 8.00 pm, the Creators’ Market showcases local crafts on the forecourt of Les Halles: ceramics, jewellery and illustrations – the perfect place to find a souvenir that isn’t from a seaside shop.

Practical tip: in summer, parking is difficult near the centre. Arrive before 10.00, or park on the Lanriec side and take the ferry across to the Ville Close – the prettiest way to get to the market.

Evening markets: the heart and soul of Breton summers

Late-afternoon markets are one of the joys of summer in southern Finistère. On Thursday evenings in Névez (4.30 pm–8 pm, from 1 May to 30 September), people come as much for the atmosphere as to fill their shopping baskets: local producers, the smell of hot crêpes, and an impromptu aperitif in the church square. On Tuesday late afternoons, the organic market in Trégunc (from 4.00 pm) offers the same experience with a focus on locally sourced produce. And on Wednesdays from May to August, the Concarneau Craft Market keeps the day going until 8.00 pm.

Practival Advice

Morning markets are usually held from 8 am to 1 pm: aim to arrive before 10 am for the best selection and easier parking. Make sure you bring cash, as not all stallholders accept cards. In summer, consider cycling: the distances between Névez, Trégunc and Pont-Aven are ideal for it. Finally, the days and times may vary depending on the season: if in doubt, the Concarneau Tourist Office in Pont-Aven keeps the calendar up to date.
